The following list is in order of mature heights. These average dimensions are varied by soils, Shelter, moisture, shade, temperatures, manures and age of clumps. Perhaps halving or Doubling the growth. Most stems green, turning orange in sun later. For general data on this Group; see previously under heading non-running bamboos.

DENDROCALAMUS LATIFLORUS (lataflora)
Stems 12m X 75mm - stiff and straight. Leaves 330m X50mm - Deep green.Our biggest non-suckering species: has always thick stems and large leaves.Edible shoot plant.Needs warmth, drainage, rich soil, shelter and moisture in abundance. Not for frosty areas or windy sites.
BAMBUSA OLDHAMI
Stems 9m X 45mm - erect.Leaves 175mm X 40mm – Dark greenExcellent shelter. Neat sturdy appearance. Best, largest, erect hedge, (if unable to control running species)Especially north of Auckland. (Not for heavy frost, or poorest soil in dry, very windy sites)Side branches grow to about 1.3m beyond stems, unless trimmed.
BAMBUSA TEXTILIS (tuldoides)
Stems 7.5m X 13mmLeaves 75mm X 13mm – mid green with light blue powdering on young stemsErect, except if old in favourable sitesDense, tidy. Hardy to coldMust have rich, moist soil at first.For B. Textilis avoid manures rich in nitrogen only. Plant deeply, firmly. Needs care to establish.This species’ walls are thinner so stems not so tough.
BAMBUSA ALBO-LINEATA (eutuldoides)
Stems 6m X 20mm – Green with a few cream vertical stripesSlightly more open, fairly erect.Leaves 90mm X 14mm – green. May flower a little.Useful hedge; popular screen.
BAMBUSA MULTIPLEX
Stems 4m X 12mm – bend outwardsLeaves 100mm X 12mm – green to olive greenDense, long branches. Rounded outline.Hardier to wind, cold, and to damper soils. Trims well to be slightly A shaped.

DEPANOSTACHYM FALCONERI (falcate)

BAMBUSA WONG TSAI
Stems 3m X 8mm at baseLeaves 40mm X 8mm at right angles to stems.Arches out and down much when well grown and uncut.Attractive in sheltered positions and fertile soils only.Can be good trimmed to any shape.
BAMBUSA GRACILLIMA
Stems 1m X 3mm bend down gracefullyLeaves 16mm X 3mmOrnamental only.Slow grower for well-sheltered sites in moist rich soil only.Overseas experience suggests this needs acid soil.
